Beautiful, Functional, Annoying (update: very annoying)
This is a great application, don’t let the title fool you. While half the fun is trying to pronounce the app’s name, the true magic happens when you start using the app. A clean interface, lickable icons and design. Lists are an exemplary feature, leaving me to question if I’ll ever use the tumblr site again between this and the native iOS application.
Of course not all is well in tublme-land. Notifications are helpful, sure, but the constant barrage of updates relating to the people I follow posting new pictures is madness. Following something in the 100s region leaves me with a very… busy notifications center. Like the reviewer prior to me, a way to toggle who appears as a notification would be nice.
The only other question I have relates to the icon of the application itself. What is the reasoning behind a soda can? I spent a few minutes pondering it, and I didn’t really see anything suggesting the reasoning behind it. Not a problem what it is, though the width of the logo does seem a bit off with my dock being set to vertical orientation.
Worth the $10, and I’ll probably recommend to anyone else using the OS X operating system.
UPDATE: 1.0.2: Unfortunately this update still hasn’t repaired many of the problems i had with this application. While the notification control is a VERY welcome change, I have found memory usage issues to have gotten worse; On a system with 16GB of RAM, I have seen this application use up to 10GB. I came back today to find my computer “out of RAM” and the system using 75gb (!) of virtual swap to accomodate for the ever increasing ram requirements of the application. I would much prefer having older posts unload entirely after a set time than screech my system a halt, requiring a force quit, which is what I’m increasingly finding myself doing with this app alone. On top of that, their window design is the ONLY one of the apps I’ve tested that has the stuttering issue that it does. Don’t get me wrong, I still love this application, but I’m finding myself increasingly frustrated with the problems faced in using it.
